I had originally thought that I could just write all of my favorite books in one post, but that became ridiculous as I started listing books. I'm a reader, and I'm trying to make my children into readers too, why else have a library in our house? I remember when my oldest was a baby and I would run through 50-100 book readings per day. Not necessarily 50 different books, maybe 20 or 30 that I could repeat a few times, but I couldn't really fathom what other mother's were doing if they weren't reading. Skip ahead two more children and I have a great idea what you are doing if it isn't reading, taking care of your other children:) I do still read to all of my kids each day, but I wanted to write down my favorites so that I wouldn't forget them and so that I could be reminded of them when I'm in that mommy-fog that occasionally will descend on me.
This is my current book tester:
1) Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? - So much fun, and once kids get older they can "read" it to you, since it's so easy to remember. We also own it's sister books, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? and Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? Board Book.
2) The Very Hungry Caterpillar - I love Eric Carle (the author) and his books feature paper collage images. This one has the days of the week, counting, colors, plus an easy to read story that you won't get tired of and want to throw out hte window.
3) Pat the Bunny - it's a classic for a reason.
4) Sassy Hello Bee, Hello Me Book - soft vinyl (plastic?) for chewing on, rhymes, mirrors, animals... Plus hte opportunity to make lots of bee buzzing sounds. You can see how chewable it is below:) It's out of stock currently from Amazon, but it's awesome, so keep your eyes out for it.
5) Almost anything by Sandra Boynton. Specifically, The Going-To-Bed Book, which was our bedtime book for years. It's good and not too long, so that the bedtime routine of sometimes-bath, teeth, jammies, book, prayer, bed didn't get too long. Plus it's so easy to read that I memorized it and on vacation I could just recite the book to them by heart and it had the same go-to-sleep effect on them! Hippos Go Berserk is also great although this is about counting and you can do fun math with it, so my three year old son still loves it.
Here are some more of our slightly-chewed-on collection in situ. That just means "in place" but it reminds me of architecture school when I

ReplyDeleteI too, love Sandra Boynton!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great list and an adorable little tester :)
ReplyDeleteI love reading too and hope that I can pass my love of reading onto her. Unfortunately, her favorite book right now is Baby Einstein's Water Water Everywhere vinyl book. Which basically means she loves to chew on books. She is developing a great love of touch and feel books though.
ReplyDeleteOne of our favorites around here lately has been Peek a Who?
ReplyDeleteI read some of those same books to my girls 20 years ago! LOL Obviously they have stood the test of time. In fact, many are packed up downstairs awaiting the grandkids...WAY WAY WAY in the future if you were to ask my hubby!LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm personally a big fan of Hippos Go Beserk. Although now that my youngest is 4, I have to BEG her to read that to her. It is very sad that as your kids age, they no longer want to hear YOUR favorites anymore. My daughter insists on inane books like Dora and Spiderman. Those books should really be banned as gifts!!
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to Thursday although now that I've seen pictures of your house, I'm guaranteed to never invite you to our messy house!
Sandra Boynton is my FAVORITE. I'm always trying to steer Weston to those, but then he goes for something I hate, like Clifford.
ReplyDeleteThe most important thing I got out of this post is that your kids are adorable. :)
ReplyDeletePinned for all my friends with kids. :)
I don't have a couple of these. I had always wanted the Hungry Caterpillar, and I would love to collect all the Boynton books. Thanks! Jodi @ www.meaningfulmama.com
