A friend of ours picked up two different types of rib eye steaks (Trader Joe's all natural and an organic specialty one) and we picked up some grass-fed rib eyes.
We seasoned them all identically.
Let them rest.
Cooked them a the same time, turning them at the same time. You get the idea. We prepared them all identically and only one person knew which was which.
After they came off the grill we let them rest before carving them up into smaller slices for testing.
Don't worry, we were pretty set with the wine:)
And we added some corn on the cob and a snap pea and mushroom salad just so there would be something green to go with the giant slabs of meat.
Taste.
Decide on a favorite and go back for more.
Realize that we don't own a decanter for wine and one of the wines needs to be decanted so we used a pitcher. This was the moment where we felt super classy;)
Total success in terms of a night with friends with a different focus than usual. Plus our kids were already sleeping so we could be present and in the moment rather than running around after them.
Interestingly, we all liked the flavor of the Trader Joe's rib eyes the best, then the grass fed ones (which we usually eat for health reasons, but taste a bit game-y), then the specialty steaks came in last place.

What a fun idea for a get together with friends. Everything looks delicious.
There's nothing like a giant slab of meat to enliven any party! I adore steak - the hubs prefers the fatty NY Strips and Rib Eyes. I love them too but try to stick with the Flanks and Filet Mignons. But either way you slice it, any kind of steak is amazing! Pass the wine please.

My husband would love to do something like this! ...minus the wine...can you believe that he is married to an Italian and he does not like wine nor coffee. What?
Sounds like a great night! One of the guys at the Whole Foods deli actually told me not to buy the more expensive grass fed because it was gamey. Who knew?
What a fun idea!! It's 10 in the morning here and I'm now craving steak, corn, snap peas and wine! yum!
We are Rib Eye lovers over here. I get the center filet. I am steak spoiled ;) Jim can BBQ like nobody's business. We never even bother to eat steak out anymore. Even high end steak houses just don't taste as good! Looks like fun and full tummies were had by all =)
i will drink wine in a pitcher. i will drink it in a boat. i will drink it with a goat. i will drink red wine, i do like it, sam i am.
What a great idea! So clever ... and thanks so much for conducting this experiment for the rest of us!
:)

I want an invite to your BBQ's. I'll bring a decanter. Wait do I even have a decanter?
~Bliss~
Holy crap I want to be at your house right now. What a fabulous idea!
Sounds like my kind of party! Red meat and wine... what else would one need? I think you're pretty classy for drinking wine that needs to be decanted. I have a couple of decanters, but I don't think 2 buck chuck requires them :)
Jessica, everything looks delicious!!! You are really making me crave meat! LOL Great post!
Now that is my kinda bbq! Next time you need a taste-tester, I'm there!
Sounds wonderful! I always love all of your great ideas! And you know any way the wine gets into the glass is fine by me ;)
I totally want to do this now!! What a great idea... And I think my hubby would think he had died and gone to heaven!
We drive 90 miles to Trader Joe's on occasion and it is totally worth it. With coolers and ice of course. Good to know about the steak. visiting rom WUW, olive
This is a very fun idea! I am not a fan of grass fed... I can taste the grass in the fat!
Wouldn't this be fun with a dessert throw-down added in?
Let me know if you need any taste-testers in the future :)
What a fun idea! Living in Cow country I could totally pull this off!
