Congratulations to Candice M. you were the winner of last week's giveaway!
Oogie-bougie, since we planted bougainvillea. Get it?
No?
That's OK, my dad appreciates the reference.
Ever since a brief stop at a HomeGoods on our way back from Lake Tahoe (trip pics here), I've had a color scheme in mind for our deck. Let me step aside for a moment to say that my husband, who only skims this blog so it's totally ok for me to talk about him, was skeptical that the "new" HomeGoods would have different items than our local store. Surprise! The minute we walked in and saw this baby, he was sold.
Ok, so orange is a popular color in our family, since our son loves it. You might have seen his new train decal or nightstand? Other than in his room we have *no* orange in the house, so I decided to bring some navy outside to tie the deck in with our existing indoor furnishings, and I love how the two colors look together.
I also picked up a welcome sign from Target's dollar aisle to carry the color scheme over to our DIY patio garden.
Two trips to Home Depot later (they have a one year guarantee on plants, so if these don't make it, we can get a refund), and we were set. I did cave in and get orange-ish bougainvillea for two pots...
The first trip, for those who care, was for the bougainvillea. We accidentally over-purchased, so when we returned 2 "trees" the next day, we snapped up some impatiens for the around the base.
This is my very first foray into gardening, so I took the advice of a fellow Northern California blogger (Kate from Centsational Girl) and purchased the Sunset Western Gardens book. I promptly forgot to cross-check anything in the book, but I do feel like at least I have access to more information now:)

loving your orange cooler and your little Gardner!
ReplyDeleteThe orange cooler is so cute! I'm pretty terrible with plants. The only reason I still have living herbs and flowers is because we learned to make self-watering planters. I just posted a tutorial on my blog, and there are several of them on youtube. It's a surprisingly easy and inexpensive project.
ReplyDeleteIt's all about trial and error - you'll figure it out! And a great place to start is with those fabulous bougainvillea!

Pot gardening tip - get some raised bases for your pots. They make them with and without wheels. I prefer grated ones so the extra water can drain out. Makes it much easier to move them around. And if you don't use them it will get extremely scroddy under your pots.
ReplyDeleteIt looks so beautiful out there! you must love sitting out there.
ReplyDeleteLove Home Goods!! What a pretty patio and the view oh my!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! Good luck with your gardening. I'm in the same boat. Planted flowers and growing a vegetable garden for the first time and praying something survives!
