First Birthday Party

Last weekend we had a play date with a friend of mine and her almost 1 year old daughter. We will be missing the first birthday party itself (we will be cramming in some end-of-season skiing), so we decided to celebrate a little at our house.

Then "a little" turned into "a lot". We made cupcakes.

Remember that scene in Sixteen Candles when Jake doesn't cover the blender and smoothie goes everywhere? How Sam takes him to the laundry room? Sigh. I'll just give you a minute to remember how amazing movies were in the eighties....

So, yeah, we had a re-enactment of that scene in my house when we were making our cupcakes. Except that Jake was my two year old son who turned the mixer up too high, and instead of Sam looking doe-eyed at him, my daughter started screaming from the batter that covered her. Sigh. Right about now all of your whose kids are grown are smiling remembering how happy a time that was and yet so happy that you aren't in the trenches now, I know.

After clothes had been changed and counters cleared we didn't have enough batter left for the ombre cake I had been planning on (like this), so we changed course and went with rainbow cupcakes instead. Mostly pink, since there were more girls than boys.

And styled the table. This is my first ever tablescape. Seriously. I thought the tutu under the cake plate was geniuns, but that's just me.

And then because it was a birthday, my kids decided this was in order.

Yes, that's a bounce house in our very own backyard. We bought it (and here I mean my mother-in-law bought it) for our daughter's third birthday and we used it a ton in our tiny bungalow with the concrete backyard that we lived in before we moved here. Much better to bounce over grass, let me tell you. We are also down to about $5 per use, so it has really paid off well. You can find the link here.
