Homemade Yogurt



I saw this recipe in the February edition of Sunset magazine and knew I had to try it. So I ripped it out and it sat on my counter for a week. At that point, I realized I had better make a decision, make it or throw out the page. This is why Pinterest is so much better! I also want to point out that 95% of the cooking and baking that I do is done with at least one, usually two "helpers". That is why I don't do fancy cake decorating (see my version here).

This was incredibly easy, my kids got to help, and I made it with Strauss' organic, grass-fed milk and Fage greek yogurt (our favorites).

Ingredients:
1 quart milk (whichever you prefer)
2 tablespoons live-culture yogurt (plain or greek, your preference)

Instructions:

1. Pour milk into a large, heavy pot and bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring often. When milk foams up, pour into a glass bowl and put bowl in a sink of cold water. Cool milk to 110 degrees (or when you can put your finger in it- I don't have a kitchen thermometer)

2. Whisk 1/4 cup milk into the yogurt, then pour the yogurt mixture back into the bowl of milk, whisk. Pour into glass jars (in my case, 4 pyrex containers), cover, wrap in kitchen towels and place in a cooler. Add a few more jars (I used water bottles) of hot water to the cooler to keep milk warm, and cover the cooler. (I also placed the cooler on a sunny windowsill) Let milk sit for 8 to 12 hours to set (I just left it overnight, about 18 hours) The longer it sits the tangier it gets, chilling stops the process. Yogurt will keep in the fridge for a week.














Huge hit, the kids loved making it from scratch. I served it with honey and blueberries one day and dried cranberries and slivered almonds the next day. Make sure you use good quality milk and a yogurt that you like the taste of since the finished product will taste like that.

  2. How wonderful that your helpers helped. I think their participation is perfect enticement for them to at least try ... and like ... their creations! I must try that with my kids, although I think they're too old for that now!
